Hopefully, if we did our job fairly well, most of Fresh Tracks will be easy to figure out with just some experimentation on your behalf. If you have experience with the base iPhone apps such Mail & Contacts you should have discovered most of the "tricks" already. Here are some tips though just in case.
A "swipe" action on the Paths, Segments and Positions table views will display a delete button to allow you to delete a row. You can select the "Edit" button to give you an additional way of exposing the delete button.

Main Fresh Tracks Screen
The main Fresh Tracks screen list the paths stored on your iPhone and allows you to create new paths.
Select the "add" button to create a new path or select an existing path to view its details.
Selecting the "info" button will show you the application version and let you set the Metric or U.S. units of measure option.
Path Screen
After entering a path name you can select to record positions for a path. For an existing path you can continue position recording from where you last left off.
Select the "start" button to start recording. While recording, Fresh Tracks automatically recognizes when a position may not be required. You may notice that the timestamp for the last position (on the last segment) will be updated quite frequently (if of course you are moving) but sometimes you will not see the number of positions increase. Do not worry though... this is just our Path Compression technology at work.
When the "start" button is selected its function and icon changes to that of the "stop" button
. Use this button to stop GPS position recording.
Selecting the "action" button will display the actions that you can select for the current path. The actions are further described in the Path Actions section.
Select the "add" button to create a new segment. On a new path, a new segment will be automatically created for you when you start recording. You can manually select to create a new segment as desired. Position recording will always save new positions into the last segment that is available.
Selecting the "info" button allows you to view, or edit, the current GPS Settings. The default settings tend to work in most cases as a result of our Path Compression algorithms. Without our Path Compression you would not be able to get such highly detailed paths using such a small amount of positions.
Note on your GPS: The accuracy and responsiveness of your GPS depends on it being able to get "locked" onto a number of GPS satellites. Once position data from at least 3 satellites are available, a position with a certain accuracy can be recorded. The greater the number of satellites that position data is available for, the greater the potential accuracy. In our limited testing on the iPhone we have observed a couple of oddities.
- Inclement weather (clouds and rain) seem to have the effect of increasing the time to get good data.
- "Spurious" positions will sometimes be reported. These sometimes wacky positions might be recorded as a result of the two other ways your iPhone gets its data. Position data will, in some cases, be reported that is not from the GPS system at all. Your iPhone will report positions based on the triangulation of the available Cellular towers and as well from the available Wifi access locations that it finds. In these cases the true accuracy is at best very general... and in the worst cases can be completely wrong! If you want to clean up your path, with Fresh Tracks, we give you the ability to view and edit your paths by removing any particular Segment or Position.
- new - v1.2 Update - We have tried our best to handle the "Spurious" non-GPS position problem. Hopefully you will find that the quality of the position data has improved and that this is no longer a problem.

Segment Screen
From the path screen you can select a segment to view or edit its details. From here you can optionally name the segment (only available when more than one segment is listed) and as well you can see all the positions that have been saved. You can "swipe" a table row here to delete a particular position. Reasons for needing to do this are varied. Maybe the position is unneccessary and you want to further compress the number if points saved. Maybe you are creating some Geo Art and are being creative. Maybe the position is "spurious".
Ok... what is a spurious position? Well, this may be a position obtained by the GPS before a desired level of accuracy was met or maybe it was obtained from a Wifi connection (see skyhookwireless.com) or by triangulation of the available Cellular towers.
Notice that you can select to View Map from here just like in the path screen. The difference here is that the current segment (and selected position) will be highlighted on the map. Doing this can really help you to confirm which positions you want may to delete. You might also find value here when looking at a map and selecting the "Where Am I" button. See Map Screen for more info on this feature.

Path Actions Screen
Path actions are pretty simple. "Mail Path" sets up the iPhone Mail program with new mail message ready to go along with a map URL ("http://...") embedded into it. This map URL can be selected by whom ever receives the mail message to view your path in their web browser.
"Mail to Fresh Tracks User" was introduced in v1.1. This is similar to the Mail Path action except that the URL that is embedded is quite special. Resulting mail messages are really intended for people you know already have Fresh Tracks v1.1 or higher. When they open the message in Mail on their iPhone and select this URL, the path you sent will be imported into there Fresh Tracks app. Give it a try by sending a message to yourself and see what you think.
The "View Map" action opens a local map view and overlays the Path you have created. See Map Screen below for more details.

Map Screen
When you select to "View Map", from a path or from segment, this screen will be displayed. This screen uses Google Maps and your internet connection... give it time to load and make sure you are on Wifi or at least a 3G connection. A slower Edge connection will likely lead to pulling hair, map rage, spontaneous combustion or some other malidy.
"Where am I?" will again start your GPS, to get your position, and will drop a marker on the map so that you can tell where you are. If you leave "Where Am I?" running while on the move, the marker will move with you to again help you better determine where you are and also help you to confirm that you are headed in the right direction.
You can select to change the zoom level (use sparingly and give this time to reload the map when you do make a change). You can also drag your finger on the map to pan the map image. Map Settings is described in the next section.
* Note that sometimes you will see a path line disappear. This is due to a bug in Google Maps that will hopefully be fixed one day. Try a different zoom level, delete some positions that you think are unnecessary, or change the Map Type if this ends up happening to you.

Map Settings Screen
From "Map Settings" you can change the current map type. The Normal and Terrain (new since v1.1) map types will consume the least amount of memory. Prefer use of one of these two options and refrain from switching them too often as both memory and load times, especially when on a 3G network, are less optimal as a result.
Save Settings can be used to save the current map type and to save the current map center position. Once you go to some effort to set and save these settings then, the next time you view the map, it will be setup for you when you load that path. When you choose to share the map using the "Mail Path" or "Mail Fresh Tracks User" actions then your friends will be presented with a map that is already setup with your nice defaults as well.
